🟣 TWITCH LIVE

As soon as a Twitch channel goes live, THE GRID posts a notification in your Discord channel – with the stream title, game, preview image, a button to the stream and, if you like, a role ping.

WAS IST TWITCH LIVE?WHAT IS TWITCH LIVE?

Twitch Live connects Twitch channels to your Discord server. When one of them goes live, THE GRID automatically posts a notification in the channel you picked for it – for example #live-streams. That way your community never misses a stream from your drivers, commentators or the league channel.

Every connected Twitch channel has its own target channel in Discord, its own message and, if you like, a role that gets pinged. You build the message from building blocks in the editor and see a preview while you work.

  • Any public Twitch channel works – including channels that are not yours. You do not need a Twitch account and do not have to log in to Twitch.
  • The stream start is announced. When the stream ends, nothing happens – the notification stays as it is.
  • Paid plans only: the feature is locked in the Free plan; from Lite on you can connect channels – see Plans.
  • Setting it up is limited to the server owner and members with the Discord permission “Administrator”. “Manage Server” is not enough – more under Requirements.
  • German default texts: the template for new channels and the button label “Zum Stream” (to the stream) are German – on English servers too. Replace them with your own text in the editor. A few other parts of the interface are also German only; this guide gives the German original with a translation in brackets.

TARIFEPLANS

Wie viele Twitch-Kanäle du verbinden kannst, hängt vom Tarif deines Servers ab:

TarifTwitch-Kanäle
Free0 – Funktion gesperrt

Lifetime+10
  • Beim Verbinden zählen alle Einträge – eingeschaltete und ausgeschaltete. Ausschalten gibt also keinen Platz frei, nur „Entfernen“.

How many Twitch channels you can connect depends on your server's plan:

  • When connecting, every entry counts – switched on and switched off. Switching a channel off does not free a slot; only “Remove” does.
  • When switching on, only the entries that are switched on count.
  • After a downgrade or when your plan ends, channels that are already switched on currently stay on and keep posting. The overview then shows, for example, “2 of 1 channels used”. You can only connect new channels or switch channels back on once you are below your plan's limit.
  • In the Free plan the overview shows the yellow notice “This feature is part of the premium plans.” with the link “View plans”, and “Connect Twitch channel” is locked. On the moderation page the “Twitch Live Notification” card then carries the badge “PREMIUM”.
💡

Tip: the pricing page does not list Twitch Live at the moment – the numbers in this table are what counts. General information on plans is in the moderation overview.

EINEN TWITCH-KANAL VERBINDENCONNECTING A TWITCH CHANNEL

Anmelden

Was du eingeben kannst

Log in on the-grid.biz with Discord.
Pick your server
Under “Your Servers”, click “Admin” on the server you want.
Open Twitch Live
Choose “Moderation” in the yellow menu bar, then the “Twitch Live Notification” card.
Add the channel
Click “Connect Twitch channel” in the top right, enter the channel and confirm with “Connect”.
The “Connect Twitch channel” window with the channel GRID_Racing found
Once you have typed, the channel found appears with its profile picture and @login – only then can you click “Connect”.

You can connect any public Twitch channel, including channels that are not yours. You do not need to log in to Twitch for this.

What you can enter

  • The Twitch login – the channel name as it appears in the address, for example pdel_live. Upper and lower case do not matter, and neither does a leading @. The empty field shows the German hint „z. B. thegrid“ (e.g. thegrid).
  • The full channel URL with https://, i.e. https://twitch.tv/pdel_live. Addresses without https:// (“twitch.tv/…” or “www.twitch.tv/…”) and mobile addresses with m.twitch.tv are not recognised – you then see “Invalid Twitch login.”.
  • A Twitch login has 3 to 25 characters: letters a–z, digits and the underscore.

From three characters on, THE GRID looks the channel up on Twitch as soon as you briefly stop typing. Errors appear in red below the field. “Cancel”, the Esc key or a click outside the window close it.

After connecting

You see “Channel connected”, and the channel appears as a new card in the overview. A new entry

  • is switched off (“INACTIVE”) and has no target channel yet,
  • comes with a German default template: the heading „Anzeigename ist jetzt live!“ (display name is live now!), below it the stream title and „🎮 Spiel“ (game) with a preview image, a divider and the button „Zum Stream“ (to the stream).

Next, open the editor with “Edit message”, choose the target channel and adapt the message – see Designing the message.

💡

Once per server: on a server, each Twitch channel can only be connected once – so with exactly one target channel. The same Twitch channel may be added on any number of other servers, though; every server gets its own notification.

Messages when connecting

MessageMeaning
“The Twitch channel could not be found.”A typo, or the channel does not exist on Twitch.
“Invalid Twitch login.”Characters that are not allowed, or an address without https://.
“This channel is already connected.”The channel is already in your list. “Connect” stays locked.
“Your plan limit has been reached.”All slots are taken – switched-off entries count too. See Plans.
“The channel could not be looked up on Twitch.” / “The channel could not be connected.”Something went wrong. Try again later.
“The Twitch integration is not configured on the server.”This is not caused by your Discord server but on THE GRID's side. Get in touch on the support Discord.

MIT TWITCH VERKNÜPFEN (OPTIONAL)LINK WITH TWITCH (OPTIONAL)

Every card that is not linked yet has the button “Link with Twitch” optional. It confirms that you own the Twitch channel. It does not change the notification – live notifications work exactly the same with or without a link.

  1. Click “Link with Twitch”. You are taken to Twitch.
  2. Log in with the Twitch account of this channel and confirm. Twitch shows the confirmation page every time and asks for permission to read your email address.
  3. You return to the overview and see “Twitch account linked”. The card now carries the badge “VERIFIED” and the button disappears.

THE GRID only stores that the channel is linked, with which Discord account and when.

MessageMeaning
“The authorised Twitch account does not match the connected channel.”You logged in to Twitch with a different account. Log out of Twitch and try again with the right account.
“The Twitch authorisation was cancelled.”You cancelled on Twitch. Nothing was changed.
⚠️

Cannot be undone: a link cannot be removed in the interface. It stays until you remove the channel.

  • Ohne verbundene Kanäle steht hier „Noch kein Twitch-Kanal verbunden“.

AbzeichenBedeutungWas tun?
AKTIV (grün)Eingeschaltet, alles in Ordnung.–

The “Twitch Live Notification” page with three connected channels
Three channels on the Plus plan: PDEL_Live is active and verified, the bot is missing a permission for Pitwall_TV, and Slipstream_Sim is still switched off without a target channel.

At the top of the page

  • Counter – for example “3 of 5 channels used”, next to it your plan in capitals (here “PLUS”).
  • “Connect Twitch channel” – locked if your plan allows no further channels. Hover over it to see why: “Premium required” or “Plan limit reached”.
  • Without any connected channels you see “No Twitch channel connected yet”.

The cards

Every connected channel has a card – in the order in which you connected them. It shows the profile picture, display name, @login and the status badges. Below that is the target channel and, if the ping is on, the role: “Target channel: #live-streams · Ping: @Stream alert”. “no channel selected” means you still have to choose a channel in the editor. If a long number follows the # instead of a name, the channel has been deleted in Discord.

BadgeMeaningWhat to do
ACTIVE (green)Switched on, everything is fine.–
INACTIVE (grey)Switched off – nothing is announced.Switch it on once the target channel and message are ready.
BEING CONFIRMED (orange)Switched on, but Twitch has not confirmed the sign-up for live events yet. This is normal right after switching on.If it stays, reload the page. If that does not help, switch the channel off and on again.
TWITCH SUBSCRIPTION BROKEN (red)Twitch is currently not delivering live events for this channel. An extra line on the card explains this; THE GRID retries automatically.Switch the channel off and on again to retry right away.
PROBLEM (red)Switched on, but something is missing – see below.Fix the cause.
VERIFIED (purple)In addition: the channel is linked with Twitch.–

When “PROBLEM” appears

The card does not say why. It is one of these:

  • No target channel is selected.
  • The target channel no longer exists – choose a new one in the editor.
  • The bot is missing one of these permissions in the target channel: “View Channel”, “Send Messages” or “Embed Links”.
  • The ping role no longer exists – choose a new role or switch the ping off.

You can see the exact cause on the moderation page by hovering over the badge of the “Twitch Live Notification” card – see Badges. That tooltip is currently German only. After fixing the cause, it can take a moment until the badge disappears.

The red error line

If a live notification fails, nothing appears in Discord. Instead, the reason is shown in a red line on the card – exactly as Discord returns it, i.e. in English. The channel stays switched on, and every stream start tries again. The line stays until the next real live notification has worked – even if you have already fixed the problem. A test message does not clear it.

TextUsually meansFix
Missing AccessThe bot cannot see the target channel.Allow “View Channel” for the bot in that channel.
Missing PermissionsThe bot is missing a permission, such as “Send Messages” or “Embed Links”.Check the channel's permissions.
Unknown ChannelThe target channel has been deleted.Choose a new channel in the editor and save.
Invalid Form BodyDiscord rejects the structure of the message.Check the message, especially sections – see Designing the message.

The buttons on a card

  • Switch – turns the notifications on or off. This only works here; the editor has no switch. Details under Testing, switching on, removing.
  • “Edit message” opens the editor.
  • “Send test” immediately sends a test message to the target channel.
  • “Link with Twitch” only appears while the channel is not linked.
  • “Remove” deletes the entry after a confirmation.

DIE NACHRICHT GESTALTENDESIGNING THE MESSAGE

SettingDefaultWhat it does
Twitch channel–Profile picture, display name and @login of the connected channel – display only.
“Show Twitch button”onAutomatically adds a link button to the stream below the message – but only if the message contains no “Twitch button” block. Placeholders do not work in the label of this automatic button.
“Ping role”offPings the selected role when the channel goes live. The mention is a separate line at the very top – unless {pingrole} appears anywhere in the message; then it appears exactly there. If no role is selected, the editor silently saves the tick as “off”.
“Select role”–The role for the ping and for {pingrole}. You can pick any role except @everyone and roles managed by Discord (bots, server boosters, integrations – including subscriber roles from the Twitch integration), highest first. There is no “no role” option; untick “Ping role” instead.
“Select channel”–The target channel of the notification. You can pick text and announcement channels, sorted by their position in Discord and without categories; threads are not offered. The editor does not check whether the bot may post there – only the badge in the overview shows that.
“Send test message”–Immediately sends the saved version to the target channel – see Testing.
“Save”–Saves channel, ping, blocks and button in one go.

The tooltips of the two tick boxes are German only: „Twitch-Button unter der Nachricht anzeigen“ (show Twitch button below the message) and „Rolle beim Live-Gehen pingen“ (ping role when going live).

⚠️

“Show Twitch button” only works without a “Twitch button” block. The default template contains this block – if you untick the box, the button is still sent. If you want no button at all, delete the “Twitch button” block and untick the box.

Saving

  • Nothing is saved automatically. “Apply” in an edit window only changes the draft. Only “Save” stores everything; the button then briefly shows “Saved!”.
  • If you leave the page with unsaved changes, the editor asks: “You have unsaved changes. Leave the page anyway?”
  • Saving does not switch the channel on. Switching on only happens in the overview. If the channel is already switched on, the new version applies from the next stream start.
  • Without a target channel, the editor asks: “No target channel is selected. Without one the channel cannot be activated. Save as a draft anyway?”
  • If the target channel has been deleted in Discord, the selection shows “Select channel” again. Saving only works again once you have chosen a new channel.

The building blocks

The message is made of building blocks (Discord “Components V2”) – it is not a classic embed. Add blocks with “Add Component”.

  • Edit: pencil icon. The window “Edit …” opens; changes only apply after “Apply”. The Esc key does not close it – use “Cancel” or the X.
  • Reorder: drag the handle on the left – only within the same level.
  • Into a container: with the “+” on the container. Every block except another container is available there.
  • Delete: bin icon – without a confirmation.

Text DisplayText with Markdown and placeholders (“Text (Markdown supported)”).“**{streamer}** is live now!”, inside a container “New text”The buttons in the window insert placeholders at the cursor position. The counter shows the characters of all texts combined.
SeparatorA divider line or just spacing (“Show divider line”).with lineThe spacing is always small. THE GRID drops dividers at the start, at the end or doubled when sending.

Replace the sample image with {thumbnail} or {avatar}.
ContainerA frame with a coloured bar on the left (“Accent Color”) around other blocks.colour #FFB533 with the text “**{streamer}** is live now!”No container inside a container. An empty container is dropped when sending.
Twitch buttonA link button to the channel (“Button label”, up to 80 characters).the label you set last, otherwise „Zum Stream“ (to the stream)Exactly one per message – once it exists, the menu item is greyed out. The “Button link” always points to the connected channel. An empty label becomes „Zum Stream“, even in the English dashboard, although the empty field shows “Watch stream”.
Media GalleryUp to 10 large images (“Image URL”, “Description (Alt-Text)”, “Show as spoiler”).one Discord default imagehttps addresses only; anything else is dropped when sending. Use {thumbnail} to show the stream preview in large – the https warning below the field appears then as well, but it works.

“Show as spoiler (blurred)” on a container currently has no effect – the setting is saved, but neither the preview nor Discord hides the content. For gallery images, “Show as spoiler” works.

The “Edit Twitch button” window with label and fixed link
You choose the label freely. The link always points to the connected channel and cannot be changed.
⚠️

Always give a section an image: Discord requires an image and at most three text lines for a section. The editor allows more lines, and an empty “Thumbnail URL” field removes the image – so does an address without https://. Discord may then reject the whole notification, and the card shows, for example, “Invalid Form Body”. Use an https address, {thumbnail} or {avatar} as the image and check the result with a test message. The empty URL field shows the German hint „https://... oder {thumbnail}“ (… or {thumbnail}).

👀

The preview is an approximation: it shows example values instead of real stream data and formatting characters such as ## and ** unformatted. It still shows lines that are dropped when sending, and {pingrole} shows the role even when the ping is off. The test message shows what the notification really looks like.

💡

Good to know: clicking a placeholder in the “Available Placeholders” box copies it to the clipboard – without any visible feedback. There is no “reset” button for the default template; the only way to get it back is to remove the channel and connect it again. The message and settings are lost then.

Limits

The line above the list shows how much room is left – for example “2/10 top-level · 10/40 total · 54/4000 characters”. The limits come from Discord:

  • 10 blocks at the top level – the automatic ping line and the automatic button count towards this.
  • 40 blocks in total – blocks inside containers, section images, gallery images and the button count as well.
  • 4,000 characters of text – all texts combined, with placeholders counted as you type them.
  • One button and 10 images per gallery.

If a limit is exceeded, the line turns red and a hint appears, for example “Discord allows at most … top-level components. The role ping and the Twitch button count towards this.” The editor checks the limits when you add blocks; THE GRID checks them again when you save and when you switch the channel on.

PLATZHALTERPLACEHOLDERS

  • {title} wird zu „PDEL_Live ist live“ – immer auf Deutsch.

Leere Zeilen fallen weg

„{viewers}“, „👀 {viewers}“ und „👀 **{viewers}**“ erscheinen also nie.

THE GRID replaces placeholders with the current stream data when sending. They work in Text Display, in section lines, in the thumbnail URL and alt text, in the image address and alt text of a gallery and in the label of the “Twitch button” block. In the label of the automatically added button they stay as typed.

Type them exactly as below – with curly brackets and the same upper and lower case. {StartedAt} or unknown placeholders such as {foo} stay in the notification as typed. In the edit window, the placeholder buttons insert them at the cursor position.

When Twitch returns no stream data

If Twitch still returns no stream data after several attempts, THE GRID posts the notification anyway – with fallback values:

  • {title} becomes „PDEL_Live ist live“ (is live) – always in German.
  • {game} stays empty, {viewers} becomes 0.
  • {thumbnail} shows the profile picture.
  • {startedAt} uses the start time reported by Twitch.

Empty lines are dropped

If a line contains placeholders and nothing but decoration is left after replacing them – Markdown characters such as ** or #, spaces, emojis or digits – THE GRID leaves the line out. That way “🎮 **{game}**” disappears when no game is set, and so does a {pingrole} on its own line when the ping is off. “Playing: {game}”, on the other hand, stays as “Playing: ”. A section without any remaining line and an empty container are dropped as well.

⚠️

Known bug: because digits count as decoration, a line that contains nothing but {viewers} plus emojis or formatting always disappears – even with 42 viewers. “{viewers}”, “👀 {viewers}” and “👀 **{viewers}**” therefore never appear. Workaround: add a word, for example “👀 {viewers} viewers”.

Placeholders in the preview

Instead of real data, the editor shows example values: “Example stream title”, “Assetto Corsa Competizione”, 128 viewers, “just now”, “My Server” and a THE GRID banner as the preview image. You cannot see there whether a line will be dropped when sending.

WAS IN DISCORD PASSIERTWHAT HAPPENS IN DISCORD

Ablauf beim Streamstart

Wann keine Meldung kommt

Denselben Stream meldet THE GRID ohnehin nie zweimal.

  • Sprache: Die Meldung enthält genau deinen Text.

What happens when a stream starts

  1. The stream starts. Twitch reports the start to THE GRID – how fast is up to Twitch.
  2. THE GRID waits about 30 seconds so that title, game and preview image are available on Twitch, then fetches the stream data. If they are still missing, THE GRID asks again up to three times, a few seconds apart.
  3. The notification appears for every switched-on entry of this Twitch channel – on your server and on every other server that has added it.

So the notification arrives about 30 seconds after the stream starts, occasionally only after around 50 seconds.

Mock-up of a live notification in the #live-streams channel
Example: a live notification with role ping – heading, stream title, game, preview image and a button to the stream.

How the notification is built

  • The sender is the bot “THE GRID”. The notification is made of building blocks (Discord “Components V2”) – it is neither a classic embed nor normal message text.
  • From top to bottom: the ping line (if “Ping role” is on and there is no {pingrole} in the message), your blocks and finally the automatic button (if “Show Twitch button” is on and there is no “Twitch button” block).
  • The default template produces a frame with a purple bar: the heading „PDEL_Live ist jetzt live!“ (is live now!), below it the stream title and „🎮 Spiel“ (game) with a small preview image on the right, a divider and the button „Zum Stream“ (to the stream), which leads to the channel.
  • In a section, the preview image is small. To show it large, use a Media Gallery with {thumbnail}.

Who gets pinged

  • Only the selected ping role. @everyone, @here, mentions of members and other roles in the text never ping – not even when they are part of the stream title.
  • @everyone cannot be selected as the ping role.
  • If the role may not be mentioned by everyone in Discord, the bot usually needs the permission to mention @everyone, @here and all roles for the ping to arrive. The dashboard does not check this.

When no notification is sent

  • Stream end: nothing happens when the stream ends. The notification stays as it is – it is neither edited nor deleted.
  • 15-minute pause: after a notification, the same Twitch channel is blocked for 15 minutes, counted from posting – not from the end of the stream. If a new stream starts during this time, for example after a lost connection, it is not announced. THE GRID never announces the same stream twice anyway.
  • Stream already running when you switch on: there is no notification for this stream, only for the next start.
  • Switched off: switched-off entries announce nothing.
  • Sending failed: then nothing appears in Discord, and the reason is shown in red on the card – see The overview. In this case the 15-minute pause does not start.

Good to know

  • Announcement channels: the notification is not published automatically. Servers that follow your channel usually only see it once someone clicks “Publish” in Discord.
  • Renaming on Twitch: THE GRID stores the display name and login when you connect the channel. If the channel is renamed on Twitch, {streamer}, {streamerlogin}, {url} and the button link keep showing the old name or address – only the profile picture is current. Fix: remove the channel and connect it again; you then design the message anew.
  • Language: the notification contains exactly your text. Nothing is translated – unlike other bot texts, it does not follow your server's language. Only {startedAt} is shown by Discord to every reader in their own language.

TESTEN, EINSCHALTEN, ENTFERNENTESTING, SWITCHING ON, REMOVING

Beim Einschalten prüft THE GRID:

Klappt alles, erscheint „Kanal aktiviert“.

Entfernen

„Entfernen“ fragt: „Diesen Twitch-Kanal wirklich entfernen? Bereits gepostete Meldungen bleiben in Discord stehen.

The test message

“Send test” in the overview and “Send test message” in the editor immediately send a notification to the saved target channel – without the 30-second wait and even if the channel is switched off.

  • The saved version is sent. If you have unsaved changes in the editor, it asks: “The test message sends the saved version. Save now and then test?”
  • If the Twitch channel is live right now, the test uses the real stream data. Otherwise it fills in example values: the German title „Testnachricht aus dem THE GRID Dashboard“ (test message from the THE GRID dashboard), the game “Just Chatting”, 42 viewers, the profile picture as the preview image and the time of sending as the start time.
  • The test does not count towards the 15-minute pause and does not clear the red error line on the card.
  • Feedback in the overview: “Test message sent” or “The test message could not be sent.” with Discord's reason in brackets. Without a target channel: “Please pick a Discord channel in the editor first.”
  • Feedback in the editor: “Test message sent.” or an error with the reason. Without a target channel, the editor currently only shows the code “no_channel” – choose a channel and save.
⚠️

The test really pings: if “Ping role” is on, the test message notifies every member of the role as well. If you do not want to disturb anyone, untick the box for the test and save.

Switching on and off

Channels are only switched on and off with the switch on the card in the overview. When you switch one on, THE GRID checks:

  • Is a target channel selected? Otherwise: “Please pick a Discord channel in the editor first.”
  • Is there room in your plan? Here the channels that are switched on count. Otherwise: “Your plan limit has been reached.”
  • Does the message stay within Discord's limits? Otherwise a notice names the limit that was exceeded, such as the 10 top-level blocks.

If everything is fine, you see “Channel enabled”. Right afterwards the badge may still show “BEING CONFIRMED”; once Twitch has confirmed the sign-up, it says “ACTIVE”. Whether the bot may post in the target channel only shows in the badge: if it is missing permissions, it says “PROBLEM”. So take a look at the card after switching on.

  • If you see the red message “Saved, but the Twitch subscription failed. It will be retried on the next reconcile.” instead, the channel is switched on anyway; THE GRID automatically retries the sign-up with Twitch later. To retry right away, switch it off and on again.
  • Other errors: “The status could not be changed.” or “Action failed.” – reload the page and try again.
  • Switching off (“Channel disabled”): from then on the channel announces nothing. It still takes up a slot for connecting, though – see Plans.

Removing

“Remove” asks: “Really remove this Twitch channel? The configured message will be lost.” Once you confirm, the entry, message, settings and any link with Twitch are gone (“Channel removed”), and a slot in your plan is free again. Notifications that have already been posted stay in Discord. If it fails, you see “The channel could not be removed.”

To save you some searching – this is the current state:

  • German default texts, even in the English dashboard: the default template („… ist jetzt live!“ – is live now!, „🎮 …“), the button „Zum Stream“ (to the stream), the fallback title „… ist live“ (is live) without stream data and the test title „Testnachricht aus dem THE GRID Dashboard“. Replace the template and button label with your own text; the fallback title and test title cannot be changed.
  • German-only interface parts: the hint „z. B. thegrid“ in the connect window, the hint in the thumbnail URL field, the tooltips of the two tick boxes in the editor and the badges and tooltips on the moderation page.
  • Garbled umlauts in German: if you use the dashboard in German, some error messages in the overview currently show garbled umlauts, for example „Ungültiger Twitch-Login.“ instead of „Ungültiger Twitch-Login.“ (invalid Twitch login). The English texts are not affected.
  • Section without an image: the editor lets you create a section without an image or with more than three lines. Discord may then reject the notification – see Designing the message.
  • Lines with only {viewers} are always dropped – see Placeholders.
  • “Show Twitch button” has no effect as long as the message contains a “Twitch button” block.
  • “Show as spoiler (blurred)” on a container currently has no effect.
  • No reset: the default template cannot be restored with a button, and a link with Twitch cannot be removed.
  • The error line stays: the red line on the card only disappears after the next successful live notification. It shows Discord's text unchanged, in English.
  • Switching language: if you switch the dashboard language, the cards in the overview only appear in the new language after reloading. In the editor, the channel and role fields visually jump back to “Select channel” and “Select role” – your selection is kept, though. It is best to reload the page after switching.
